Insecurity Is a Cage. Horses Handed Me the Key.
I know insecurity intimately.
Not because I was born without confidence, but because life taught me, from a very young age, that the world wasn’t always a safe place.
I grew up with an abusive father.
I grew up in a religion that filled me with fear instead of freedom.
I grew up in poverty, constantly wondering if there would ever be enough.
And while other children were running and playing, I was fighting severe asthma, learning what it felt like to live in a body that seemed to betray me.
Every one of those experiences whispered the same lie:
“You’re not enough.”
That is what insecurity is.
It isn’t vanity.
It isn’t weakness.
It is the survival strategy of a child who learned that being seen wasn’t safe, that making mistakes had consequences, that love could disappear, or that life could change overnight.
Those children grow up.
But often, their insecurity grows up with them.
I’m 51 years old, and I still know what insecurity feels like. Healing isn’t about pretending it never existed. It’s about refusing to let it make your decisions.
I was fortunate.
I had horses.
Horses never asked me how successful I was.
They never cared how much money my family had.
They didn’t judge my past, my fears, my appearance, or my mistakes.
They simply responded to one thing:
My energy.
If I approached them carrying fear, they felt it.
If I tried to fake confidence, they saw through it.
If I learned to breathe, become present, and trust myself, they met me there.
Every interaction became a lesson.
Not in riding.
Not in horsemanship.
In becoming secure.
A horse cannot be manipulated by the story you tell about yourself.
They only respond to the person you are in that moment.
And slowly, without even realizing it, they helped me rewrite a story that had been written in childhood.
The story changed from:
“I’m not enough.”
To:
“I am safe.”
Then…
“I can trust myself.”
And eventually…
“I am enough.”
That is the incredible gift horses offer.
They don’t fix us.
They don’t rescue us.
They give us the space to discover the strength that was buried beneath years of fear.
If you’ve spent your life feeling insecure, please know this:
Your insecurity is not your identity.
It is a scar from experiences that taught you to survive.
Scars tell a story, but they don’t have to write your future.
Today, when I stand beside a horse in complete silence, I don’t hear words.
I feel truth.
A horse reminds me that confidence isn’t loud.
It isn’t domination.
It isn’t perfection.
Confidence is quiet.
It is presence.
It is breathing deeply even when your heart remembers fear.
It is choosing trust one moment at a time.
And perhaps that’s why horses heal so many people.
Because in a world constantly telling us to become more…
They simply invite us to become ourselves.
If you’ve ever struggled with insecurity, know this:
You are not broken.
You are not weak.
You are carrying a story that deserves compassion.
And sometimes, healing begins with something as simple—and as profound—as standing in silence beside a horse.
